Vols beat NC State 35-21

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tyler Bray completed 27-of-41 passes for 333
yards and threw for two touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 35-21 win over North
Carolina State on Friday.

Cordarrelle Patterson hauled in six balls for 93 yards and caught a touchdown
and added another score with a 67-yard run. Zach Rogers caught a 72-yard
touchdown and Rajion Neal carried the ball 22 times for 53 yards and a
touchdown for the Volunteers (1-0), who posted a disappointing 5-7
record last season.

It's the day Vol fans have been waiting for, the start of the 2012 football season.    

It's been a long offseason for the team having to dwell on a loss to Kentucky for the last eight months.

But today the Vols open up the season against NC State.

The arrived in Atlanta yesterday afternoon.

This is the first time in 73 years that the team has played a regular season game on a Friday.

The Vols will take on the Wolfpack tonight at the Georgia Dome at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be aired on ESPU-U.

3 Loudon schools cut SROs from budget

There will no longer be school resource officers at three schools in the city of Loudon.

They include Loudon High, Fort Loudon Middle and Loudon Elementary schools.

The city has been paying for two SROs at a cost of $150,000 a year. The city had asked the school board to help pay for the officers because of a budget pinch.

Following a city council meeting Monday night, the two officers will return to regular patrol shifts.

As many high school seniors begin to prepare for college, one local scholarship program is gearing up for a higher number of applicants this year.

"tnAchieves" provides assistance to public school students who continue their education at a community college. In East Tennessee, those schools include Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, and Walter State Community college.

The "last dollar" scholarship provides funds to cover whatever tuition costs remain after financial aid and other scholarships.

Class is in session for Lenoir City students.

"We've got lots of new students," said Superintendent Wayne Miller. "It's interesting to watch them come in, they're all really excited to be here, certainly sad to see summer go."

Miller is not sad to turn the page on the distractions of last school year.

Loudon Co. residents pray for safe school year

Just days before their children return to class, a group of people in Loudon County gathered Monday to pray for a safe and fulfilling school year.

Organizers of the prayer walk in Loudon estimate around 50 people showed up.

They called on God to protect students, teachers and staff. They also asked for help taking on drug addiction in their community.
